Hasanuddin Global Student Conference (HGSC) 2026, which will be held at Hasanuddin University, Makassar, carries the theme “Transforming Environmental Agendas: A Socio-Political Approach to Global Climate Justice.” This conference aims to serve as a platform for students, academics, researchers, activists, and practitioners to discuss the challenges and opportunities in achieving global climate justice through social and political approaches. Climate change has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. Its impacts are not only reflected in rising global temperatures and increasingly intense extreme weather events, but also in threats to food security, public health, access to natural resources, and social and political stability in various regions of the world. The climate crisis has demonstrated that environmental issues can no longer be separated from issues of development, human well-being, and global governance. Over the past decades, the international community has sought to respond to these challenges through various global frameworks, including commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which place climate action among the primary priorities of global development. However, achieving these objectives continues to face numerous obstacles. The debate regarding the historical responsibility of industrialized countries for global carbon emissions also remains a central issue in international climate diplomacy. Developing countries and vulnerable communities often bear the greatest impacts of climate change despite their relatively small contribution to global emissions. This condition underscores that the climate crisis is not merely an environmental issue, but also a matter of social justice, resource distribution, and power relations within the international system. Amid evolving global geopolitical dynamics, environmental agendas are becoming increasingly interconnected with various strategic issues, ranging from energy transition, resource security, and international trade to competition in green technology. Decarbonization policies and low-carbon economies not only create new opportunities for sustainable development but also have the potential to generate new forms of inequality if they are not accompanied by principles of justice and inclusivity. Therefore, transforming environmental agendas requires an approach that goes beyond technical and ecological considerations and also takes into account the social, political, and economic dimensions that shape decision-making processes at the local, national, and global levels. The concept of climate justice has emerged as an approach that emphasizes the importance of the equitable distribution of benefits and burdens in addressing climate change. This approach promotes greater inclusivity, the protection of vulnerable groups, and a fairer allocation of responsibilities among various global actors. Thus, efforts to address climate change are aimed not only at protecting the environment but also at creating a more equitable and sustainable global system. Through the theme “Transforming Environmental Agendas: A Socio-Political Approach to Global Climate Justice,” HGSC 2026 seeks to encourage critical dialogue on how environmental agendas can be translated into equitable policies and concrete actions.
